BRC Looking for Volunteers to Assist with Library

No comments:
You don’t have to know the Dewey Decimal System to “play librarian” for one local retirement community!

Brethren Retirement Community needs volunteers to assist residents with checking books, magazines and other materials in and out from the organization’s on-site library. Volunteers will also return items to shelves as needed. This opportunity is available to volunteers who are at least 18 years old every Tuesday from 9:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. or Tuesday and Friday from 2:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m.

“The library aide gives support to the residents by assisting with reading selection and checking books in and out. Their visual presence assures visitors to the library that help is readily available,” says Janet Ashworth, Volunteer Coordinator Brethren Retirement Community.

To learn more about this volunteer opportunity or other opportunities within our community, please contact HandsOn West Central Ohio at (937) 548-8002, ext. 211, or visit www.handsonwestcentralohio.org. Guest Column from State Representative Jim Buchy: Working Together to Bring Jobs, Issue 2 is Key to the New Direction

21 comments:
Lately, I have noticed a few people in the district speaking about Issue 2, collective bargaining reform for government employees, as if they had all the facts. Unfortunately, the claims made and printed in local newspapers by these individuals are not the facts. A YES on Issue 2 means jobs, and a NO means status quo.

Issue 2 will lower the cost of doing business in this state by providing local governments and the state the ability to rein in labor cost which is the highest cost to any government employer. The other side wants things to stay the way they are. According to Rich States, Poor States, Ohio is 49th in economic performance rank. Our tax structure and policies are costing this state economic productivity. We must make changes to the way we function as a state. There are two choices: make changes and move forward, or continue down the same path in a rut that causes productive and promising people to flee the state and jobs to leave. I supported collective bargaining reform in the legislature because I went to Columbus to do a job; I want to turn this state around.

In the letters to the editor recently, Governor Kasich and the pro-jobs side was accused of being weak by wanting to negotiate with the unions. Throughout the collective bargaining reform process we have invited the unions to the table. We want their input and partnership in this opportunity to turn Ohio in the right direction. The OEA has not come to the table, and many of the unions refused to offer suggestions on how to correct the language. During the process I held three public forums in the district. I listened to the residents and government employees, and I then brought those suggestions back to the legislature. Those suggestions were a key part of making SB 5 a good bill. It is natural that leaders would remain open to discussion with the unions and avoid a political battle in November that will cost each side 40 million dollars and fill your mailboxes and consume your televisions.

Issue 2 is about jobs, and bringing this state in the right direction. I am confident I am on the right side of this issue. Despite what you may read from the other side, many Ohioans understand the consequences of the status quo. In November, I will be voting YES for jobs, YES for Issue 2. That is the right direction and that is how we will move Ohio forward.

Greenville's K-8 Plan in Detail, Submitted by Citizens for Quality Greenville Schools

20 comments:
For quite a while people have been talking about the possibility of Greenville Schools constructing a new building. The project has gone through many stages and is at the point that everyone needs to look at the project and get an idea of what has been done to get to this point. In January a group of people from every precinct in the district was invited to be part of a committee that would look at all of the proposals. From January to May they met each month, visited your schools and also some new schools in the area to see what has been done in other districts. The end result was the project described below.

The proposed layout, with Ohio Street running along
the northwest side.
The Project

  • A new, fully furnished facility for grades K-8 and renovations to the existing High School.
  • An environmentally friendly and efficient building utilizing the benefits of "green" technology
  • A building in which security features provide a safe environment for students and staff.
  • New classrooms providing up-to-date technology, science labs, and flexible learning spaces to enhance the instructional environment.
  • A building providing the space and accessibility to meet the needs of our physically challenged population.
  • Renovations to the existing high school to create efficiencies of operation and enhanced educational opportunities.

The Rationale:

  • The Ohio Schools Facilities Commission (OSFC) advised the district that aging buildings would cost more to renovate than to replace and OSFC would provide co-funding accordingly.
  • The consolidation of Woodland, East, South, and the Junior High would allow operational cost reductions contrasting the current building configuration.
  • The State's financial commitment to GSD's for the project is $18,192,750.
  • Interest rates are at an all-time low.
  • It is much more cost efficient to run one new building than four old buildings.

The Cost for Taxpayer:

  • 6.43 Mills for 28 years and 1/4% School District Income Tax
  • With the elimination of a 2 mil permanent improvement levy enacted in 1989
  • $ 100,000 home = $173 annually (taxpayer 64 years old and less living in home)
  • $ 100,000 home = $130 annually (taxpayer 65 years or older living in home)
  • $ 25,000 income = $63.00 annually ($50 Senior Credit)

[Editor's Note: The above amounts reflect the net increase in tax burden after adding the school levy and removing the permanent improvement levy.]

Remember the Salem Mall? By Abraham Lincoln

9 comments:
It was 43 years ago when me and my son, Christopher, then 11 years of age, was digging in our sack looking for something to eat. Chris used to go with me to art shows in the area. He was probably full of cheese given away at the shows and too young to drink wine – so I drank his.

I liked to use art shows as a kind of gauge to see what people were buying. If I had some of that then I knew I would be successful and bring home the bacon, or enough money to buy it with.

Sometimes I noticed that landscapes were selling or the larger “sofa size” pictures sold out fast. Whatever sold quickly was what I would be painting for the next show.

It was like the good old days, when I sold oil paintings, because we could buy things for the family. My wife said the extra money was spent for clothes and shoes for the kids – we had five children. We got the new washer after selling an oil painting and a week later I sold another and we got a matching clothes dryer.

Chris and I used to go to the Art Shows held at the National Cash Register Company, NCR, on south Main Street in Dayton, Ohio. If not there then at the University of Dayton where we set up, with others, on the grounds and sold our pictures.

At NCR I would always sell out and often won prizes NCR awarded for the best drawing or the best oil painting. I won Best of Show for a Buffalo I carved out of a piece of floor joist taken from the gutted farm house they were tearing down to build the new JVS.

I have a drawer full of ribbons and while some have faded, others are permanently wrinkled – they bring back a lot of memories of those days when art with a capital “A” was important to me and my family.

Salem Mall was a mecca for me and other area artists who met there to compete with one another and to sell pictures to the wandering public. I always set up my display in the hallway besides Rike’s Department store because it had a constant stream of people coming and going through the store or through that end of the mall complex. And I did very well there.

I was set up there when the first lunar vehicle was landing on the Moon and the surface of the Moon was being described on radio.

The crew consisted of Armstrong as Commander and Aldrin as Lunar Module Pilot, with Command Module Pilot Michael Collins. Armstrong and Aldrin landed in the Sea of Tranquility and became the first humans to walk on the Moon on July 21.

I listened and looked at my still wet oils depicting the Lunar landscape with the landing module firmly in place. People stopped and looked at my black and white oil paintings and practically fought each other to buy them.

It was so lucrative that I came home and painted one or two more Lunar landscapes and hurried them back to the Salem Mall and sold them too. I didn't sell much of anything else that week but I was selling and other artists came down to see what I had that was causing such a ruckus. Sadly, that era of space for artists ended.

I never thought that the Salem Mall would end up being hauled away in large dump trucks and the giant parking lot that was filled to overflowing with shoppers would be a sea and Sears an island?

DARKE COUNTY- Brilliant Beginnings Learning Center in Versailles has been recognized by the Darke County Community Improvement Corporation (CIC) as its Business-of-the-Quarter award winner. The recognition came at the June 29 Partnering for Progress (P4P) meeting at The Andersons Marathon Ethanol facility in Greenville. Brilliant Beginnings, which offers learning and development services for children in addition to child care, opened its doors in October 2010 and is located by the Versailles School at 380 Marker Road.

“Brilliant Beginnings Learning Center has been a very valuable addition to the Versailles community by having increased opportunities for parents that are seeking quality child care services,” explained Randy Gump, Versailles Village Administrator

Accepting the award for the company were owners Cassandra Lochtefeld, Director of Child Care Operations, Business Administrator Jill Brewer, and Shawn Brewer. The ownership team was then given the chance to update the crowd of about 60 P4P investors on the company’s progress in the 10 months since it’s opening. Brewer and Lochtefeld thanked the group for recognition of their fledgling efforts and discussed future plans. Gump discussed the impact they have already had.

“In establishing their presence in the community, Brilliant Beginnings made a capital investment of $700,000 in building the new child care facility, coupled with creating 16 new jobs for Versailles and Darke County,” Gump stated, “We are very grateful for Brilliant Beginnings choosing Versailles”

Conveniently located adjacent to Versailles Schools, Brilliant Beginnings’ building is equipped with nine classrooms containing age-appropriate sized equipment, a full service kitchen, and a computer lab. The facility also features a therapy area where children can receive speech, physical, or occupational therapies to help each child reach their potential. The campus is situated on 2.5 acres, with ample room for multiple outdoor activities. More information on the company can be viewed at: http://www.brilliantbeginningslc.com/

Brilliant Beginnings is the second company to review the Business-of-the-Quarter award from the Darke County CIC. Specialized Castings in Greenville received the initial award earlier this year in May. Awards will be given each year quarterly at Partnering for Progress investor meetings. Anyone wishing to nominate a company can do so by calling the Economic Development Office at 548-3250.

All but six states post job gains in past 12 months

Only six of the 50 states have suffered employment declines since July 2010, with the worst drops occurring in Indiana (down 28,300 jobs) and Georgia (down 24,900).

It has been a shaky recovery, to be sure; yet all but six states have added jobs during the past 12 months.

Texas, as usual, is No. 1 in the latest seasonally adjusted figures from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. The Lone Star State picked up 269,500 jobs between July 2010 and the same month this year.

But Texas is not alone in registering a broad upswing. Two other states posted six-figure gains: California (up 189,600 jobs in 12 months) and New York (up 106,600). An additional 13 states added at least 25,000 jobs during the past year.

Only six of the 50 states have suffered employment declines since July 2010, with the worst drops occurring in Indiana (down 28,300 jobs) and Georgia (down 24,900).

On Numbers also generated monthly breakdowns for the past year, counting the number of monthly gains or losses for each state (as well as the number of even, or unchanged, months).

Texas and North Dakota fared the best, registering 11 employment gains in 12 months. Georgia and Indiana were the worst, with nine month-to-month declines.

5th Annual Tour de Donut Registration is Open!

No comments:
Currently 500 participants from 14 states and Canada registered!

The 5th annual Tour de Donut will take place September 10, 2011 at Brumbaugh’s fruit farm in Arcanum Ohio.

The Tour de Donut is a unique bicycle event, where your ability to eat donuts is just as important as your ability to ride your bicycle. The event is a timed bicycle "race" where riders visit two "donut stops" during the 30 mile course and eat donuts. For each donut the rider eats during the ride (and keeps down) they have 5 minutes deducted from their ride time.

New this year will be a shorter ride “the Donut mini” with one donut stop in 15 miles. The mini will offer its own awards just like the longer distance while offering an alternative to those who are concerned about the full route.

Prizes are awarded in age group classes including the coveted golden Tour de Donut championship belts for the best adjusted "donut time" , most donuts eaten and fastest bike only time.

You do not have to be an experiences cyclist to take part in this event. While the event is technically a "race" very few consider it a serious competition, remember this is all in fun! Anyone on a bicycle is welcome.

Online and Mail-in registration will remain open until the 1000 rider limit is reached or September 3. There is no day of registration.

The unique event has grown rapidly to one of the largest events in the Midwest, last year nearly 700 participants from 14 states took part and is expected to exceed 1000 in 2011.
Last year over 250 dozen donuts were eaten.

The 12 winners were then entered into a drawing where 4 were selected for a ride on the blimp as well as a host of other prizes including a meet and greet with NASCAR driver Juan Pablo Montoya. Of course, Steve found a mini blimp and was then selected in the drawing! Steve joined the ranks of past blimp riders including celebrities like Johnny Depp, Tom Cruise, Linda Ronstadt, B.B. King and many others.

Steve was kind enough to send along the following photos that he took of the ride and of the blimp itself.

Congratulations, Steve, and thanks for sharing with us!

Shane Buckingham Wins Week 1 of the Cavalier Clothing High School Pick 'em Challenge

1 comment:

Congratulations to Shane Buckingham for winning Week 1 of the Cavalier Clothing High School Pick'em Challenge! Shane picked all 6 games correctly and his guess of 49 total points in the tiebreaker was off by 3 points.

So, yes, there was a need for the tiebreaker... Darcy Stump also picked all 6 games correctly but her guess of 56 total points was off by 4, giving the win to Shane.

For those who may be curious what would have happened if it was forced to the second tie breaker? Both picked 49 points, both being off by 10...

Congrats to Shane and thanks to everyone for playing! Check back next week for your chance to win a gift certificate for a shirt from Cavalier Clothing!

Abraham Lincoln: Local Television Star

No comments:
I was commissioned by an investment company, and others, to write 3 books for a television series that I was to 'star' in. And, I had to produce a script for thirteen (13) one-half hour shows. I wrote the books, in four weeks, and did the television script; and all of the demonstration segments; and hosted the series from the PBS station in West Palm Beach, Florida. The actual filming lasted five (5) days.

This was my first experience doing a television series. In spite of the freezing studio temperatures and the daylight to dark shooting schedules, I managed to pull it off with only one hitch. That was solved within minutes and the shooting continued.

I need to say that a television show can be shot without turning the cameras off or without stopping. It seldom happens that way but it is done. My taping was done that way.

Once I began talking and 'acting' I never stopped until the floor manager was on his hands and knees in front of me with cue cards, showing the seconds left to the end. So, essentially, you start talking and never stop until the show ends. The one hitch that I mentioned happened when I suddenly lost track of everything in my mind. I had no idea what I was to say or do next. I lost it. My mind went blank.

I had been told, if this happens, to stop and freeze. When the director upstairs saw me freeze she told the cameramen to stop taping (it takes a few seconds). After lunch, she simply put me back on the set and rolled her tape (which I never saw) back to the last sentence I had actually finished before I froze up. Then I began talking from that point on and the segment was completed. I have watched the tape many times and you would never know anything was amiss.

It had taken me about 20 years to become a household name publishing newsletters, books and magazines. The television shows were seen all over the world on Public Television Stations and on The Learning Channel, and I was suddenly even more famous than I had been before.

The above is an actual photo taken by a commercial photo studio used in the promotion of the series.

Jesse Green Meets with Fair-goers

Aultman Running for Fair Board

1 comment:
Thank You for all the support and your continued support, and Congratulations to all those that were elected to the Darke County Fairboard this year. - Matt

In just a few short days the 155th Great Darke County Fair will be upon us. Have you ever wondered who is responsible for making our county fair great? Well it is the Senior Fairboard of the Darke County Agricultural Society.

This year running to be a part of this board is Matt Aultman, of Stelvideo in Adams Township. Matt is a 30 year old lifelong resident of Darke County. He is married to Morgan (Rismiller) Aultman, 30, and they have two children Sophia, 4, and William, 2. Matt and his family are strongly rooted to both the agricultural community and the fair. Matt has raised calves and sheep for 20 plus years, specializing now in club lambs for 4-Hers and dairy steers for freezer beef and 4-H projects. Matt also farms 500+ acres along with his parents, David and Lisa Aultman, and grandparents, Larry and Doris Aultman. Matt is further anchored to the agricultural community as a grain buyer and feed expert at Keller Grain and Feed, Inc, located in Horatio. Matt is an active member of the Darke County Chamber of Commerce where here is the treasurer and Chair of the Agriculture Committee. He is a trustee of the Darke County Farm Bureau and an advisor for Grade A Kids 4-H Club. Matt has had an extensive history with the Darke County Fair through his ten years of 4-H, where he exhibited many projects in the Youth building and showed rabbits and sheep and ended with the honor of being Outstanding Junior Leader, and FFA, where he exhibited many projects in Shop and Crop and ended his career as the Darke County Junior Fair King and Star Agri-businessman for the State of Ohio and the Big E Conference.

Commissioners' Corner - August 2011

No comments:
The month of August always indicates the start of many things. School openings are just around the corner, families are taking that last vacation, and of course, The Great Darke County Fair. As this is written, the fair is in full swing, and by most observations, it looks like the fair may set new attendance records again this year. If you haven’t been to the fair yet, go and enjoy all it has to offer. There literally is something there for everyone. The County Commissioners are enjoying the fair and invite all of you to attend and have a good time.

The Commissioners office has been a little quieter lately. We seem to be in a hold pattern for now on a lot of issues. Some are due to the fact that it is August and people are getting ready for school to start and vacations to end. Commissioner Rhoades got back on Sunday from the National Plowing Contests in Belmond, Iowa, and so far all he will say is that he did “lousy”! We are sure that he represented Darke County well.

We are finally getting some numbers to work with from the State. In a month or so, we will start working on our budget for 2012. Our Revenues once again are being cut by the State, so we will adjust accordingly. Although the loss of State dollars is painful, approximately $560,000 income, down from $1,000,000 the past several years. The Commissioners and the Elected Officials have already taken steps to assure that Darke County remains within our means. The Elected Officials and their Staff have worked diligently for the last several years to get the most out of our tax dollars, and without taking a raise. If you see one of our people that work in the Courthouse, or any County Employee, thank them for doing the thankless job that they do.

As most of you know by now, the Darke County’s Economic Development office has been on quite a roll this year. Last week, the Office was able to announce the retention and expansion of 2 longtime businesses in the County. Ramco Motors and Fram both made huge commitments to grow here and we could not be happier. Both of these businesses required a lot of effort by a lot of people, but in particular, Marc Saluk, the E.D. Director. The efforts made by the C. I. C., the Partnering 4 Progress Group, the Commissioners and the Economic Development Office, are really making headway in this tough economic climate. In our conversations with Marc, he still has quite a few projects in the pipeline. We will let everyone know when we can talk about them. Marc is a little more at ease now with the way Ohio is implementing the “JOBS OHIO" program. After a longer than expected transition, it now seems that Marc can complete some of our projects more quickly. We have a great relationship with Jeff Hoagland who is the head of the Dayton Development Coalition and our contact group for JOBS OHIO. This relationship allows us to be able at anytime to talk directly with Jeff and to get things done more efficiently. We will do everything we can to keep Darke County on the present path of economic expansion, and growth, which benefits all of us.

That seems to be all for now, so go out and enjoy the Great Darke County Fair, and prepare your children for the oncoming start of school. The Commissioners will be at the Fair, but will still hold their regular public meetings on Monday and Wednesdays at 1:30 p.m. like always here in the Commissioner’s Office, at 520 South Broadway, south of the Courthouse. See you there!

- The Darke County Commissioners

Miami Valley Mounted Search and Rescues Sponsors Versailles Fire Departments 9-11 Memorial Stair Climb

No comments:
On Tuesday, August 23, the Miami Valley Mounted Search and Rescue presented Brian Pearson and Scott Garrison of the Versailles Fire Department with a check to the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation in memory of the fallen firefighters of 9-11. They are traveling to Pittsburg PA to climb 110 flights of stairs in memory of their fallen brothers on 9-11 as part of the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation's series of 9-11 Memorial Stair Climbs (you can find more information on this event here).

The Miami Valley Mounted Search and Rescue is a community based, all volunteer, non-profit organization. We are in existence to serve the public and support law enforcement with a well trained, fully equipped mounted unit. Our service is available through law enforcement, fire departments and EMA's. In addition to search and rescue we also offer event parking assistance, patrolling of hiking, biking trails, camping areas and special events. We provide the public with information on child safety awareness and lost child prevention. In an effort to lessen the need to search for missing or abducted children, we take the safety guidelines of the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children to clubs, schools and churches. We share our ID kits and pamphlets with children, parents and grandparents.

As a non-profit organization we felt honored in donating 110 for 110.

Greenville City Schools – Earns “Excellent” Rating on ODE District Report Card

6 comments:
“I am extremely happy with the results of our 2010-11 district report card! The credit truly goes to our students and staff who have worked together focusing on making every instructional moment count in the classroom,” said Susie Riegle, Superintendent of Greenville Schools. Over the past four years, the District’s State Report Card reflects positive growth in all areas. Riegle added, “We have consistently demonstrated positive academic growth in the district over the past several years. The emphasis on solid instructional practices being used in all of the district’s classrooms has been and will continue to be the standard. We are working to sustain and increase with each year the positive academic growth we have been experiencing.”

The Ohio Department of Education’s State and Local Report Cards rate the performance of districts and schools using four measures, including the state indicators drawn from academic tests. Other measures include:
  • Value-Added results, which show whether students meet the expected one year of growth for students in grades 3-8 in reading and math. In 2010-2011, 79.5 percent of Ohio public school districts and 81.4 percent of its schools met or exceeded expected Value-Added gains.
  • The Performance Index looks at the performance of every student, not just those who score proficient or higher. In 2010-11, 89.3 percent of Ohio’s districts and 71 percent of its schools improved their Performance Index scores.
  • Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP) is a federally required component that measures achievement of each student subgroup, including racial and ethnic components. Half of the public school districts (50.6 percent) and nearly 60 percent of its schools met AYP in 2010-2011.

High School Big Buddy Mentors Needed to Make Big Impact in the Lives of Local Children

No comments:
Big Brothers Big Sisters of Shelby and Darke County is excited to announce that another great year is in the works for the Big Buddies after-school program. This is the thirteenth year the program has been in place. The Buddies program is a nine-month commitment where high school sophomores, juniors, and seniors volunteer to work with and mentor elementary aged children two times per month. During these meetings the high school students, under the supervision of Big Brothers Big Sisters staff, work with one or two children on different educational and recreational activities. The program continues to promote social and educational enhancing activities, as well as personal safety.

High school mentoring programs have become a widespread component of many nationally affiliated Big Brothers Big Sisters agencies. Studies prove that children from who spend time with a positive role model are more likely to become healthy, productive adults. The Big Buddies program has proven beneficial not only for the “Littles” but for the high school volunteers as well.

In addition to our after-school program, the agency has over 100 community-based matches throughout Shelby and Darke County. These matches meet together twice a month for outings which are planned around the volunteer’s schedule. The goal of the community-based program is to match a vulnerable child with an adult mentor, who can serve as a positive role model, and expose the child to enhancing and uplifting activities. There are still over 40 children waiting for a Big Brother or Sister in the program, so now is the time to think about how you could put a little magic into the life of a child!

If you are interested in becoming a mentor in our High School Buddies program or the community-based program, please call 547-9622 or 492-7611 or logon to our website at www.bigbrobigsis-shelbydarke.org for more information. Big Brothers Big Sisters of Shelby & Darke County is a United Way member agency and an affiliate of Big Brothers Big Sisters of America.

TESTIMONIAL FROM A BIG SISTER/LITTLE SISTER MATCH

No comments:
Big Sister Connie Hamilton and
Little Sister Ashley Schoffner, both of Sidney,
represent a successful Big Sister/Little Sister
match within the Big Brothers Big Sisters of
Shelby & Darke County agency.
Ashley is the granddaughter of
Orville and Sandy Schoffner.
Connie Hamilton, age 64, and Ashley Schoffner, age 17, both of Sidney, represent a successful Big Sister/Little Sister match within the Big Brothers Big Sisters of Shelby & Darke County agency. Their relationship shows the positive impact of mentoring. They were matched in May, 2002, and now have more than nine years of meeting twice a month for activities they both enjoy.

Ashley is the granddaughter of Orville and Sandy Schoffner. She was enrolled in the program at age 5, before starting kindergarten, when she was in need of a positive role model and additional learning experiences to expand her social skills. At that time, she enjoyed drawing, coloring, playing dress-up, and watching cartoons.

Connie volunteered to become a Big Sister mentor in 2002 because her two daughters were Big Sisters, and she understood the importance of the program in the lives of vulnerable children. She worked as a beautician and childcare provider, as well as teaching Sunday school. Because she is quiet and patient, she deals well with young children. Connie enjoys fishing, hiking, picnicking, roller skating, cooking, gardening, pets, museums, reading, arts and crafts, board games, movies, dining out, and music.

Connie proved to be a dependable, positive role model who soon became a needed friend and mentor for her Little Sister.

Come and learn how good marriages can be renewed and broken ones be restored by becoming an excellent wife.
  • Experiencing God - God is inviting you to experience Him in an intimate love relationship through which He reveals to you His will, His ways, and His work. Through the biblical principles in this course, God can teach you how to know when He is speaking to you; recognize His activity around you; adjust your life to Him and His ways; identify what He wants to do through you; and respond to His activity in your life.

Did you feel it? The Dayton Daily News is reporting that a 5.9 magnitude earthquake centered in Virginia could be felt in various places around the Miami Valley. In fact, the Montgomery County administration building in Dayton was even evacuated.

While several people have mentioned on Facebook and in the chat box that they definitely felt it, we have not heard any reports of actual damage or anything, but any time the ground shakes is certain to raise some concern.

So, did you feel it?

DCSO: STAND OFF ENDS WITH NO INJURIES

2 comments:
On August 22, 2011 at approximately 4:00 pm the Darke County Sheriff's Office received a 911 hang-up call from 3563 Vietor Road southwest of Greenville, Ohio. Upon calling back the number the Dispatcher received an open line in which she determined a domestic dispute was taking place and the female caller was unable to communicate because her spouse was armed with a gun and threatening suicide. Darke County Deputies were dispatched to the scene. The female was able to leave the residence without injury as deputies arrived on the scene. Deputies attempted to make contact with 58 year old Gerald “Arlin” Alderman. Alderman refused to communicate or leave the house. The Darke County Special Response Team, Randolph County, IN Special Response Team and Tri-Village Rescue responded to the scene. Negotiators attempted to communicate with Alderman several times but he continued to refuse all contact. Deputies observed Alderman walking around inside the house armed with a firearm. At approximately 1:00 am Alderman started communication with negotiators and voluntarily surrendered to deputies outside his home without further incident. Alderman was transported to Wayne Health Care in Greenville for a mental health and medical evaluation.

The stand off lasted over 9 hours and concluded with no injuries to the subject or officers. Two neighboring homes near the incident were evacuated or affected for the duration of the incident. The subject displayed a firearm to officers several times but no shots were fired. 2011 School District Report Cards are out

24 comments:
The Ohio Department of Education has released its 2011 school district report cards. The state has 26 "indicators" by which it measures performance. Every Darke County school district improved its indicators, with the exception of Mississinawa (which only dropped one indicator). Five districts improved from Effective to Excellent: Greenville, Franklin-Monroe, Ansonia, Tri-Village, and Arcanum. Versailles remained Darke County's only district with the "Excellent with Distinction" rating, meeting all 26 indicators. Versailles and Franklin-Monroe were the only Darke County districts to have a Performance Index over 100. Three school districts improved, but not at a rate to meet ODE progress goals: Arcanum, Greenville, and Tri-Village.

The ODE report card home page is here. Dayton Daily News has a good summary for Darke County here (you have to go to a separate page for Miami County to see Bradford's stats). When viewing the graphic below, keep in mind that the state had 30 indicators through 2009, but only 26 beginning in 2010.
