Books and Bears for Babies community service project begins soon to collect new and gently used stuffed animals and books. All items collected here will remain in Darke County to be distributed by area First Responders to children and families during emergency situations. The collection drive kicks off July 2nd and runs through July 23rd at area donation stations around Greenville.
Books and Bears for Babies is a new service project launched by Samantha Buchy, a State finalist in the National American Miss Pageant. The pageant encourages community involvement by asking each participant to bring with them one book and one stuffed animal. Miss Buchy, however, wanted to give something more back to her Community by expanding the project locally.
The National American Miss Pageant is a pageant for “Today’s Girl” and “Tomorrow’s Leaders.” The pageant program is based on inner beauty, as well as poise and presentation, and offers and “All-American spirit of fun for family and friends.” Emphasis is placed on the importance of gaining self-confidence, learning new skills, good attitudes about competition, and setting and achieving personal goals, and learning the importance of community service. The pageant seeks to recognize the accomplishments of each girl while encouraging her to set goals for the future.
As the host of Books and Bears for Babies Miss Buchy has had the opportunity to meet with several public officials and community leaders. “Meeting the leaders in our community and speaking with people like the Mayor, and Chief of Police was a little scary for me but, I am excited to be helping collect special things that will help young children to be comforted when they are in scary situations,” said Miss. Buchy.
Donation boxes will be available from July 2nd through July 23rd at the following locations: the City Municipal Building Main Lobby, Wayne Hospital Main Lobby, Gordon Orthodontics, Dr. Steve Stentzel, Solutions Hair and Nail, Jim Gable Insurance and the Flower Patch. Miss Buchy is sponsored locally to participate in the state level competition by the Flower Patch, Thirty One Gifts, Solutions Hair and Nail Salon, Buchy Food Service, Jim Gable Insurance, Gordon Orthodontics, Dr. Steve Stentzel, and Fredonia Hardware.
Please consider dropping off a stuffed animal or children’s book during July to help Books and Bears for Babies in Darke County!
