Reid Hearing Center’s custom earbuds popular with athletes, music lovers

Ears come in all shapes and sizes. So for 30 years, the staff at Reid Hearing Center has created custom “earbuds” designed to be a perfect fit.

Though it is clearly not a “budding” new business, Vicki Dawes with Reid Hearing Center/Reid ENT said demand continues to grow for the earbuds from athletes, swimmers, and music lovers who want a better fit for their ipod or MP3 players.

“They are much more comfortable than standard earbuds,” Dawes said. “They started from the same principle as the hearing aid earmold.”

A fitting requires an office appointment, but it only takes about five minutes to do the ear mold. The buds take one to two weeks to get.

The basic custom buds are $99, with prices for others varying depending on the type.

Dawes said some are made for sleep ear plugs, others to hold music buds more firmly in the ear, and some are also created with electronics such as stage monitoring, pilot headsets, sound gear for musicians and other uses.

“They get sound closer to the ear drum for better hearing, and they reduce background noise,” she said.
